Democratic Reform was the lead-off policy as the Alberta NDP Government began the process of setting out its legislative agenda in yesterday’s Throne Speech.
According to the speech the first act of the Alberta NDP government will be to introduce a bill entitled “An Act to Renew Democracy in Alberta”, which would ban corporate and union donations to political parties in this province.
While that was the only specific democratic reform policy set out in the speech, it also hinted that “There is much more that needs to be done to renew our democracy.”
The Government indicated that it will engage in a consultation process with MLAs and the public before taking the additional steps needed for renewal.
I have previously written my views that electoral system reform is needed, and I look forward to seeing whether that issue will be part of the discussion.
