Preliminary Election Expense Limits Set for October 19th By-elections

Elections Canada has published the preliminary election expense limits for the federal by-elections on October 19, 2015 in the electoral districts of Ottawa West – Nepean, Peterborough and Sudbury.

These are preliminary limits, which are calculated based on the number of names on the preliminary lists of electors for the electoral district. Once the revised lists of electors has been prepared, the final limits will be published. For the final limits, the higher of the number between the preliminary list and the revised list is used.

Preliminary expense limits for political parties is calculated in accordance with section 430 of the Elections Act (Canada), and limits for candidates are calculated in accordance with section 477.5. The Act places limits on how much political parties and candidates can spend on election expenses in a by-election in an effort to limit the influence that money has on the outcome of the by-election.

The final election expenses limits for these three by-elections will be available on Monday, October 12, 2015.
